The Greatest Story in Sports:
The 100 Year History of the Packers

"Another mistake Bengston made was a late night in October 1969 at My Brother's Place, a new main street bar that had quickly become a hangout for Packers players, white and black."

Chris Whitcomb
Child #4

"I grew up in a bar and with Packers players sleeping on our couch. Everyone was welcome which was both controversial and what made us the coolest bar in town. No one would believe this bar was in Green Bay 1968. Coach Lombardi, the Packers players, our parents and all of the other patrons came together in peace, love and happiness. It sounds cliche but I swear it was not."

Mike Whitcomb
Child #1

"This powerful true story reminds us how love, music and simple acts of kindness - like a handshake or a shared song on the jukebox - can bridge the deepest divides and overcome even the harshest hate."

Vince Lombardi - Head Coach

"There are three things that are important to every man in this locker room. His God, his family and the Green bay Packers. In that order."

John Gordon is widely credited with the design of the iconic Green Bay Packers "G" logo. He was also a part time assistant trainer for the team from 1960-68. During his downtime he would draw portraits of the players and their families. One day he walked in to My Brother's Place with a flip book of sketches, including life-size portraits of Packers stars. He found himself engaged with owner and diehard Packers fan Jim Whitcomb where he casually mentions that the brothers - the Black Packer players - are looking for a place to hang out.

Tune in to find out how that one fateful conversation changed the trajectory of the town of Green Bay WI while creating the most unlikely of trusted allies and life long friends. Good people coming together for fun and joy and having each other's back through it all.

Jim was a preppie high school football star and a natural athlete. He was a curious and radical thinker shaped by the changing and tumultuous times of the 1960s. During the course of our story he transforms from conservative entrepreneur to open minded risk taker. Coupled with his raw smarts and contagious sense of humor, he was ready for what would come his way.

Barb was graceful, disciplined and resilient, the product of a traditional upbringing and attending an all-girls college before Jim swept her off her feet. She was the firm hand that the bar needed but also garnered respect and affections across the spectrum of bar patrons.

After a fire at their Menominee, Michigan hotel, the Whitcombs found themselves in unknown territory buying a derelict tavern - complete with horse manure on the floor. They had four kids under the age of 10 and had to figure out a game plan fast. This is their story and our story too.
